Manchester United takeover reaches extra time + Save RedNews
Some thoughts on the takeover process and an update on Marc Guehi to suggest Manchester United are not the only Premier League looking at the defender.
We knew the potential takeover of Manchester United would take time. The offers tabled thus far will be enough see our beloved football club involved in the biggest transaction in the history of sport, yet there is some questions marks over whether there will be a deal at all.
Wednesday’s soft deadline for second bids has come and gone, along with Thursday’s 4pm extension. INEOS owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, requested the extension and got his second bid in the door on Thursday while Qatar’s Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani appears to have gone quiet (for now
It’s clear that neither of these bidders look particular keen to compete with each other towards the higher-end of the £6 billion asking price. Neither of them want to overpay even though we are already talking ridiculous money.
Then there’s Finnish entrepreneur Thomas Zilliacus… who seems pretty opportunistic at best. It may seem harsh, but his attempts to get involved smell like a PR stunt.
The Glazers are doing their utmost to drive up the price even more. They are desperate for more parties to come forward with more bids for The Raine Group to consider.
Meanwhile, there are suggestions that as many as eight bidders are interested in the club. Some of these are willing to finance the Glazers, only to take up a minority stake in the club, i.e, complete disaster!
United fans are rightly desperate to get rid of the Glazers, but at the same time, the fanbase is split over what happens next. This includes match-goers and those who sit on social media all day and every day of their lives. Some fans are fawning over bidders buying the brand they support, which is a world away from what I fell in love with when I started going to games.
Yet I still love Manchester United. That is something that will never change.
Marc Guehi update
We recently gave you an update on Manchester United enquiring about Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, who Chelsea have a back-up option on. There were no guarantees at the time that The Reds would make a move for the young England international.
Footballtransfers.com spoke to friend of Stretty News, Steve Kay, about Guehi this week and he has heard something new about the Palace defender. He claims that Tottenham Hotspur have shown an interest in the 22-year-old and that his present club are demanding £65 million for his signature. However, Spurs are willing to pay £45m.
"Spurs are interested in signing Marc Guehi in the summer," confirmed FootballTransfers collaborator Steve Kay. "Palace want £65m. Spurs apparently won't pay that - they're looking at paying around £45m.
"Tottenham have been looking for a young, versatile defender for quite a while now, and they have recently inquired about Aymeric Laporte and Pau Torres.
"They want someone who can play as a left- or right-sided centre-back in place of Eric Dier, who is a midfielder playing in a centre-back role, and Davinson Sanchez, who has been at the club since 2016 but simply hasn't hit the heights expected of him."

Red News is a crucial voice for Manchester United fans. I hate the thought of it not being there anymore because it is something that has always been part of my match day experience.
From a young age going to Old Trafford, I would pick up one of the fanzines on the way to the games. Whether it was Red Issue, Red News or United We Stand, I was always intrigued to get that sort of perspective on the club.
It was a big reason behind my decision to get into journalism and start writing about my beloved Manchester United.

If you believe in fanzines, and the different voice RedNews offers, please do support the cause if you can. Since 1987 RedNews has been there to cover and run a critical (or complimentary) eye over it all. It has and always will be, a fanzine; 'a non-official publication produced by enthusiasts of a particular cultural phenomenon for the pleasure of others who share their interest.'... They cover MUFC and your lives around it; warts 'an all. They admit to not always getting it right, but at least they try. Information gets lost on the internet; we provide detailed coverage, and have contacts spanning decades as well as diverse fan memories and opinion. 30+ different Red voices every issue. They will be there, hopefully, for any more battles ahead - and shining the light on any club, or football, excess.
