Manchester United Newsletter: Thursday 26th January
Covering: 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest in the first leg of our Carabao Cup semi-final, Wout Weghorst's first goal for the club, Rashford's 10 in 10 and more.
Morning all,
Manchester United have one foot in the Carabao Cup final after beating Nottingham Forest away in the first leg of the semi-finals. We’ve published all of our post-match content, including player ratings and observations from the game, if you want to read back on everything from the City Ground last night.
I enjoyed watching Lisandro Martinez acknowledge the away fans for their non-stop support. It’s not the first time this has happened and I get the impression he really appreciates our fans for how quickly they’ve made him a favourite. That said, I would imagine it was similar at Ajax. How could you not love Licha?
Speaking about Martinez after the match, former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane said: “He’s got pride in his defending. He’s a lad you want to be in the trenches with.”
Marcus Rashford made it 10 goals in as many games with a sublime solo goal to make it 1-0 in the first-half. Ten Hag hailed his performance after the full-time whistle and said the forward is unstoppable right now.
It was great to see Wout Weghorst score his first goal for the club, too. Did you know he already has more goals (1) than Mykhailo Mudryk, Joao Felix and Cody Gakpo combined (0) since their transfers this month. The Dutchman may not be the most aesthetically pleasing centre-forward United has seen, but he is certainly doing a up. He was brilliant in the build up and defensively challenging for the turnover.
“Yeah, it’s always special and you always want to score goals,” Weghorst said after the match. “Also, you prefer to have this first one, of course, as quick as possible. So really happy. I think it was a really important moment also. 2-0, I think shortly before the half-time, that gives us a way better feeling in the break.”
On that note, I’m going to prepare for this morning’s news over the blog. Make sure to keep an eye out for updates throughout the day.
Until tomorrow morning’s newsletter, take care and up the Reds!
