Liverpool vs Manchester United: Preview, stats, Q&A with the enemy
The last time Manchester United faced Liverpool in the Premier League, the two teams were being perceived very differently.
Good morning, Reds.
It wasn’t long ago that the Scousers were seen as the quintessential example of a thriving club in the Premier League, with a good manager getting the most out of his players. By contrast, Manchester United were a million miles away, until Erik ten Hag came along.
United went into the reserve fixture this season having lost their opening two games — 2-1 to Brighton and 4-0 at Brentford.
The Scousers had drawn their opening two matches against Fulham and Crystal Palace, though they were still seen as the side that closely challenged Man City for the title last term.
Yet against the odds, Ten Hag and his players kick started their campaign with a 2-1 win. Liverpool look a shadow of their former selves while United get stronger and stronger.
I have long come to the conclusion that there’s never a good time to play Liverpool at Anfield. We’re either miles better than them and worrying about them having bragging rights. Or we’re miles behind them and fearing a hammering.
It’s not a fixture I enjoy and I can’t wait to get it out of the way. We all know that form goes out the window, but at least we can have more faith in this group of players now than we had 12 months ago. Liverpool scored nine goals against us in the Premier League and conceded none last season. Today, United have a chance to win our first game at Anfield since 2016.
